Each September, thousands of companies join the Baby Safety Month, an awareness program that was originally created by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) to educate the general public and raise awareness among parents on how to keep our babies safe.
As creators of popular baby monitoring apps (Bibino, Baby Monitor 3G, Storky) and being parents ourselves, we feel responsible for contributing to the baby safety awareness month.
We prepared a few baby safety tips for parents regarding the sleep of your little munchkin. Babies spend a significant part of the early stage of their lives sleeping. Therefore we must do everything we can to keep them safe and sound while they're dreaming away.
Please keep in mind that the following information serves as general recommendations, and it may not be suitable for everyone. Each baby has unique needs, therefore it’s essential to find practices that suit the parents and their babies the best.
Remember that baby's nursery should be practical and safe rather than cute and design-tuned to the very last detail.
Years-old cribs may no longer be safe for your baby to sleep in. Always look for safety-approved and certified cribs and bassinets. To ensure your baby's safety while sleeping in the crib, keep the sleeping surface free from any blankets, quilts, pillows, toys, and other things, to reduce the risks of suffocation, choking, and entrapment.
A safe sleeping crib space should have nothing in it but a tight-fighting mattress and a sheet to cover the mattress. Make sure there are no large gaps between the mattress and the crib.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies should be placed on their backs while sleeping, not on their sides or their stomach during their first year of life. This sleeping position reduces the risks of suffocation and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Ensure the baby sleeps in a bassinet or a crib that meets the safety standards, and that the baby is lying on a flat and firm surface.
It is also recommended to keep the baby's crib or bassinet in the same room where you sleep, at least during the first 12 months.
When putting your baby for a nap or a night's sleep, make sure that the temperature in the room is comfortable for your baby. You can ventilate the air in the room before the baby goes to sleep, but don't let the windows open when it's the actual sleep time.
When putting your baby to sleep, make sure your little one has just enough layers of clothes - the general recommendation is that your baby should have no more than one more layer of clothes than you, but this may be different for everyone depending on your baby's needs.
Don't use blankets or other kinds of covers that could potentially be dangerous for your baby. You can use sleep sacks as an alternative.
According to recent Sleep Junkie research, parents lose approximately 109 minutes of sleep every day during their newborn baby's first year.
And we got it - the first few months after childbirth don't exactly feel like a vacation. Infant safety and the sleep of our baby are our number one priority. But, to be able to take care of your little ones, and to keep them safe, you as a parent or caretaker must get enough sleep too. If you can, get help from your family members or close friends to babysit. Try to eat well, relax, and establish a nighttime routine to ensure you get enough sleep.
In the first months of the baby's life, it's essential to use a device that monitors your baby's breath for safety of your baby. As your newborn gets older, you may consider getting a reliable baby monitor that's perfect for everyday use as well as traveling with the baby, and that's always at hand.
With the onset of baby monitors, parents could finally sneak in some time for themselves, for work, or to do necessary house chores while their little ones are asleep. At Bibino, we put all our effort into providing the most reliable and secure baby monitor.
Although baby monitors give us parents more freedom, they should never fully replace the parent's presence and regular checks in person.
